The assessment involves standardized tests, observational data, and interactive activities to gauge your child’s reading, writing, and language abilities. The assessment can be spread over multiple sessions if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning difference that primarily affects reading and spelling abilities. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.

How do I know if my child needs an assessment?
If your child struggles with reading, writing, or spelling despite regular instruction and effort, it may be beneficial to have them start with the dyslexia screener to see if additional testing is warranted. Common signs include difficulty recognizing words, inconsistent spelling, and trouble with phonological processing.

At what age can a child be assessed for dyslexia?
Dyslexia assessments identifying the risk for having dyslexia can be used as early as kindergarten. Diagnostic evaluations are typically more accurate for children aged 6 and above. Identification is key to providing timely support and intervention.

What happens after the assessment?
After the assessment, we provide you with a detailed report and discuss the findings. We also offer recommendations for educational strategies, interventions, and resources tailored to your child’s specific needs.

Is dyslexia curable?
While dyslexia is a lifelong condition, with the right support and strategies, individuals with dyslexia can achieve significant improvements in their reading and writing skills. Our goal is to empower your child with the tools they need to succeed.

Is this the same testing the schools provide?
The schools will generally test a child to see if they are eligible for school-based services, like an Individualized Education Plan. They do not typically test a child for dyslexia.
